I purchased L4D2 last week and wanted to play it on Friday. Now I don't have a internet connection at home so I use my cellphone to go online at Egde or GPRS speeds. I knew that L4D2 required online activation, and so did Crysis which I activated without any problems, so I thought L4D2 would also be fairly quick and easy. It's not. I insert the game and Steam starts installing. Fair enough, it requires Steam for activation I thought.
Steam cannot continue setup because of no internet connection. Ok, so I set my cellphone up as a modem.
Steam starts updating itself.
1 hour later it asks for Steam account details. I do not have one so I create an account.
20 minutes later, after Steam doesn't respond twice, I am eventually able to log in.
Ah, it asks for the L4D2 cd-key. I enter it in and it starts installing.
I think to myself that this is it, finally I will get to kill some zombies.
After installation, Steam loads itself up. Sweet, I can play now.
I click on L4D2 and it says 'Preparing to launch game...'
15 minutes later it shows 'Updating game...'. 'You can play in 3hrs'.
I stop the download process in Steam and tell it to never automatically update my games.
Now I can't play it without it trying to update the friggin game, even if the status for the game shows Update Stopping. And each time I want to play I have to log into Steam?!
